Runner’s knee, also known as chondromalacia patella, is a common source of knee pain that develops when the kneecap does not move properly. This condition affects the patella and the groove in the femur where it glides, known as the patellofemoral joint.
When the patella becomes misaligned or overused, the cartilage beneath it begins to wear down. In earlier stages, this is often referred to as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), where symptoms may still be reversible. As the condition progresses, structural damage to the joint may occur.
